Last Saturday, we held the "Kapehan at Talakayan" session at Johnsonville Community Centre in Wellington. The topics discussed included Employment Rights and Healthcare with special time allocated to talk about Mental Health.
Our guests David and Stephanie from Citizens Advice Bureau Wellington were able to respond to different questions from the participants and even Banyuhay volunteers. They said that they've also learned a lot about Filipino community which can help them more in their volunteer work at C.A.B.
Labor Attache Angel Borja Jr. from the Migrant Workers Office (previously known as Philippine Overseas Labor Office) shared the services that his office provides to OFWs. He encouraged us to continue having informational sessions like this to our community and to remind people to go to his office if they need assistance or to understand their rights.
Another guest speaker, Maria Milmine - a Counsellor in Wellington CBD, shared her story and why she taught talking about mental wellbeing is important especially for people who migrates to other countries and has to adjust to a new environment and culture. We hope to shed more light on this in our future sessions.
While we're discussing, we have afternoon tea. We also had a recap quiz after which triggered further questions and clarifications. To make it fun, the person who got the highest point got a prize.
As always, we ask for feedback from our participants and we're glad that people find it informative and useful.
Rest assured that we will have more of these events in the future in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Please continue to watch this space and support our community.
