Event: Philippine Festival 2023 and 125th Independence Day Celebration

Venue: PETONE CENTRAL SCHOOL - 16 Britannia St., Petone

This event was hosted by Bulwagan Foundation Charitable Trust in collaboration with other organisations:

  • Banyuhay Aotearoa Charitable Trust

  • Filipino Community Sports Club

  • FilCoro (Wellington Filipino Community Choir)

  • Filifest

  • Sentro-Ako Wellington

  • Exceptional Communications

There were speeches from our special guests:

  • Philippine Embassy Representative

  • Mayor Barry Campbell – Mayor of Lower Hutt

  • Labour MP & Minister of Police – Hon Ginny Andersen

  • National MP Chris Bishop

The programme consisted of performances, games and raffle draws at the school grounds while there were cultural displays such as Bahay Kubo and Filipiniana outfits set up inside the school hall.

There were food stalls on the school grounds as well, selling different Filipino foods. Banyuhay Aotearoa was fundraising by selling Beef Pares, Palabok, Pork Empanada, Cassava cake and Balut. We have a number of volunteers who were always smiling and had done exemplary teamwork while serving our customers.

We also have volunteers who shared their talents by singing and dancing.

  1. Malaya Tadhana Hemady sang “Walang Hanggang Paalam” and “Sa Ugoy ng Duyan”. Dugong Pilipino talaga!

  2. Nadine Martinez and friend, playing violin and cello (2 songs)

  3. The Zapanta sisters sang “Pagbabalik” and “Himig ng Pag-ibig”. The Zapanta sisters: Ate Mulan, Ditse Dudai, Sanse Kimie, Dete Bambi. And their Dad playing the guitar.

  4. Ella Cabauatan did two tap dancing performances. Ella, in her younger years, is popularly known for her ballet dance.

Lastly, we have volunteers who did the Filipiniana Fashion Show featuring Likha NZ’s outfits. Part of our advocacy is to promote the Philippine culture including our very colourful Filipiniana costumes. This fashion show is for everyone, the ordinary Filipino people who are proud of wearing Filipiniana, of all ages, sizes, and shapes.

We are thankful to everyone who supported us to make this event successful.
