RECAP: Wellington Migrant Orientation 2024

On October 5th, 2024, Banyuhay Aotearoa successfully hosted a Migrant Orientation session for Filipino migrants in Wellington at the Collective Community Hub in Johnsonville, Wellington. With three remarkable speakers who generously shared their expertise. Their insights not only highlighted critical aspects of employment and social services but also fostered engaging discussions that emphasized the importance of understanding one’s rights and available resources.

Event Highlights

A Comprehensive Overview of Employment Rights

David Brown from Wellington Citizens Advise Bureau opened the session with a thorough overview of employment rights. His presentation highlighted the various types of workers—permanent, temporary, and contractors—and the unique rights each category possesses. David emphasised the importance of scrutinising employment agreements, providing attendees with key indicators to watch for.

Understanding Benefits and Support Services

Next, we had the pleasure of hearing from Pam Unsworth from Ministry of Social Development New Zealand, who delved into the extensive range of benefits and support services available in New Zealand. One of Pam’s key messages was that access to support is not limited to those receiving benefits; many resources are available to everyone, regardless of their financial situation. Pam encouraged attendees to reach out to their local MSD (Ministry of Social Development) or WINZ (Work and Income New Zealand) offices for personalised advice. This proactive approach empowers individuals to understand and utilise the support systems in place, ensuring they receive the help they need.

Navigating Tax Responsibilities

Lay Bregonos from Inland Revenue New Zealand wrapped up the speaker events of the session by discussing tax responsibilities, Working for Families, and other helpful services they provide. Reiterating to have a direct conversation with them about your situation or queries. This ensures you get accurate guidance and helps you avoid mistakes by getting things right the first time.

Engaging Q&A Sessions

The Q&A sessions that followed each presentation were dynamic and helpful. Attendees were eager to engage, posing insightful questions that sparked lively discussions. Each speaker highlighted how their organisations work together to create a seamless support network, allowing individuals to seek help from one agency and still be directed to the appropriate resources.
