Yesterday in Wellington (Filipino Community Centre), we wrapped up the week's series of hybrid meetings with former ELE workers. We covered updates on their claims and entitlements, addressed immigration questions, and provided guidance on new job offers.
Additionally, we reminded them about accessing nearby food banks and applying for benefits from NZ Ministry Social Development or the Philippine Embassy if eligible.
Many are still awaiting financial aide or finding new jobs, facing challenges in meeting basic needs. Those in the Philippines on holiday when ELE went on receivership applied for OWWA assistance but were informed of a 2-3 month wait, intensifying their desperation as they struggle to support families there and pay bills in New Zealand.
After the Zoom meeting, those present at FilCom Centre who successfully claimed benefits shared their experiences to inform others. It's uplifting to witness everyone's supporting each other and smiling although going through tough times.
A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who contributed in any way to this initiative. Your generosity enables us to assist them during the holidays.
Although there's much work ahead to assist them, the "bayanihan" spirit makes the burden a bit lighter.
